Amidst diversity, self-interest, and social barriers of today’s generation, compassion and empathy still managed to prevail in Stella Maris Academy of Davao (SMAD) as Marisians created lasting smiles for the chosen families during the ‘A Day with our Friends’ program. The activity showcased the immense love and devotion of Saint Candida Maria de Jesus in serving the poor and the marginalized. In honor of Mother Foundress’ Day, such a meaningful and remarkable event unfolded and took place in the school on August 9, 2023.
Warmth enveloped the whole campus as the visitors arrived and got escorted by the presidents and vice presidents of different classes into their respective classrooms. They were openly welcomed by the students which filled each and everyone’s hearts with love and joy. With the help of the class officers, a program was organized with various engaging activities awaiting, including games and dance performances prepared by the whole section, which had laughter echoing in the hallways and corridors of the school. Most of all, the highlights of the program were sharing the life of Mother Candida through a creative presentation, and the giving of tokens to our dear friends.
It has been a tradition for the SMAD community to have this celebration annually, as a way of embodying the values modeled to us by Saint Candida. However, the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis led the school administration to put the event on hold. Hence, it ignited a sense of nostalgia for some students as this occasion returned. “Having the ‘[A] Day with our Friends’ activity once again brought back my memories from my elementary days here [in SMAD],” Alora Guitguiten, a Grade 10 student said in an interview. The comeback of this practice made her reminisce about her past experiences of the event.
“Where there is no room for the poor, neither is there room for me.” is one of the famous sayings of our Mother Foundress that may appear as a cliché to many Marisians, but carries an immense meaning. This quote conveys the profound message of her commitment to helping the less fortunate, even if she was poor and unlettered. It as well reflected her values of solidarity, generosity, and selflessness, which the Hijas de Jesus Congregation continues to live out to this day. Her deep love for the Almighty Father above became her driving force to do everything in God’s will, which inspired several individuals.
Thus, the ordinary day turned to become extraordinary, bringing the hands and hearts together, living the legacy of compassion which continues to embolden others to reach out to those who are in need.
